Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
