PSG Edges Marseille on Penalties to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now claimed the season-opening cup on fourteen separate times.

The Parisian giants needed a stoppage-time leveler followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward triumph in the showdown featuring the Ligue 1 winners and the Coupe de France holders after the French winger found the net early on.

Yet, Marseille struck two times in the closing moments to seize a shock lead. First, the English forward converted from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking twist of events, the Portuguese striker snatched a vital equaliser in the dying moments to force the contest into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, saving decisive attempts from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted successfully for PSG to seal a convincing shootout win.

The record winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now won this competition for the 12th time in the last thirteen seasons.
