Intense Winds Leave Numerous Homes In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals encouraged to remain inside as strong winds lash the country.

Powerful gusts attaining velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have left approximately 90,000 properties lacking electricity and compelled authorities to call off in excess of 100 aircraft departures, as reported by local media.

These gusts are impacting the entire South Island and lower areas of the northern region, according to the country's meteorological service.

New Zealand authorities have issued rare severe gust advisories - the highest alert level - in key areas such as Canterbury and Wellington.

Locals have been urged to remain inside, refrain from journeys, and make arrangements for additional power and communication outages.

Widespread Damage and Crisis Response

The power cut is primarily influencing homes predominantly in the South Island, although agencies report that power was being restored progressively.

Domestic outlets have stated that in some places homes have lost their roofs, while trees and electricity poles have been toppled by the gales.

In Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being hit by a falling limb at a well-known hiking path on earlier this week.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a female was pushed toward approaching vehicles on a road by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was filmed in a widely shared car camera footage.

Aircraft services in and out of the city have been halted as a result of the gusts, while various routes and public facilities are shut down.

At the same time local leaders have announced a crisis declaration, to facilitate recovery activities.

Labor Protests Amid Severe Weather

The powerful gales on Thursday come as many of teachers, doctors and other public workers are participating in what has been described as a "mega strike", demanding better pay and working conditions.

Yet the intense climate has compelled them to change certain arrangements, with several external protests relocated inside or called off.

Similar gusts are also sweeping the nearby nation, ushering in a heatwave to the country's outback.

Officials have declared fire bans for fear of wildfires.
