EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
