A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was made public, raising questions about whether someone profited from non-public details of the event.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion surged in the time leading up to Donald Trump declared on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market statistics shows that users put the odds of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

However the market's assessment had jumped to over 10% by the end of the day and surged in the early hours of the next day, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a bet based on inside information," commented an industry expert.

A handful of other platform users also earned significant sums from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Intensifies

Politicians are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation put forward on recently seeks to ban government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to predict everything from sports to politics.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Insider trading is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting space.

A company executive for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
