2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Developer to Rescue Struggling Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to oversee the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as Project Ethos.

Management Change Comes After Poor Response

The new appointee steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's disappointing early showing last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure notified employees about this organizational change through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had indicated the requirement for a distinct direction.

Ismailer noted that the developers is now reimagining the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to address player expectations.

Trend of Strategic Hires

The news follows a similar action taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock development group.

Here is the complete message from Ismailer's memo:

Team—

I understand you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Previously I sent you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative developers we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to persist.”

With your dedication and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The gamer responses from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was informative. It affirmed the appeal of a action-packed game but made clear we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the requirement for a more distinct vision.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the input to mind and overhauled the title with a refreshed vision - one that’s positioned to achieve its ambition to our players.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To boost the outstanding progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of the team. Following a period of discussions, Ben starts with us on next week.

His management and expertise in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having devoted the last 15 years creating and leading some of the most well-known franchises in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in welcoming Ben in the coming days. We are all eager to keep seeing the progress of Project ETHOS in the months to follow.

David

Experience of the Incoming Leader

The appointee presently serves in the position of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman previously worked at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, before that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Information and Vision

The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a community playtest. Initially, the developers portrayed the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the style."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the description reads. "Challenge the competition with new abilities, risks, and obstacles that evolve every round. Will you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Or go big, risk it all, and hope your team can achieve the highest spot? The choice is in your hands."

Project Ethos has not yet received an confirmed release date or platforms, but players can expect additional details as creation progresses.
